Balajana Sakyam - Support for poor children
Balajana Sakhyam, the student group nurtured by Malayala Manorama is celebrating its platinum jubilee
this year. Malayala Manorama & Balajana Sakhyam decided to support the treatment of 75 children
(since then the number has been increased to 100) with heart disease, all below poverty line, from Kerala.
The children were identified in 2-tier selection process in which camps were held in different parts of Kerala. Of the 1200 children initially registered under the programme, 600 children were screened under 2 final camps held in Kottayam and Calicut in December 2004. A list of 100 children was made from this group. 16 of these children who were critically ill were operated out of turn. The surgery of the remaining 84 began from the first week of February 2005 and is to finish before April 2005. Malayala Manorama is completely funding these surgeries. As a reciprocal gesture, Madras Medical Mission has announced that we would support the surgery of another 100 children thus raising the total number of beneficiaries under this scheme to 200. Still, only 200 children are covered. Out of 600 children screened in two final camps 400 more need surgery without delay. Therefore, it is necessary to offer surgical help to another 175 children immediately. This will require financial help to the tune of Rs.100 thousand per patient. Therefore to cover 175 more children, Madras Medical Mission requires help to the tune of Rs.10.00 million.
