The Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases has performed over 150 Ross operations till date in patients aged between 3 months to 70 years. The Ross operation involves using the native pulmonary valve as an autograft and a homograft valve at the pulmonary position as an allograft. This operation has distinct advantages in selected patients in avoiding the use of anticoagulants, significantly fewer re-operations and better cardiac hemodynamics.
The Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases performed the first cardiac transplantation in the private sector within the country in September 1995. Instrumental in starting the transplantation registry for ready availability of all data of potential recipients, the Institute is credited with the first heart and lung transplantation and bilateral sequential lung transplant.
