The Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Unit is a unique facility that handles the entire spectrum of congenital cardiac anomalies from newborns to adults. The first in the country to utilize inhaled nitric oxide therapy for severe pulmonary hypertension and modified ultra filtration during open heart surgery in neonates and infants, this Unit has operated on approximately 7500 cases of congenital cardiac anomalies with excellent results, the youngest patient being just 81 hours and weighing 1.4 Kgs. Besides operating on the 'simpler' anomalies like atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus, this Unit regularly handles the most complex anomalies that include hypoplastic left heart syndrome, transposition of great arteries, complete atrio ventricular canal defect and total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage. The Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases has the largest series of single stage umfocalization for the correction of ventricular septa] defect, pulmonary atresia and major aorto pulmonary collateral arteries (MAPCA). The paediatric Ross program is worthy of special note. To date 20 Ross operations have been performed in children at the Institute, the youngest patient has been 3 months old.
Cosmetic considerations are also given importance while dealing with growing children. Simple anomalies like atrial and ventricular septal defects are repaired through cosmetically appealing incisions that minimize the visibility of the surgical scar.
The ICVD's Medical staff are a constant source of healing companionship. Children soon learn to interact with the medical team as they would with friends, looking up to the doctors and nurses with love and affection.
