Madras Medical Mission completed the surgery of the 200th child under the Hridayapoova Sakhyam scheme with Balajana Sakhyam – the student body nurtured by the Malayalam newspaper giant – Malayala Manorama on 3rd August 2006. 200 children from below poverty line selected from across the state of Kerala, were the beneficiaries of the scheme. Madras Medical Mission thanks the Alimighty for giving us cent percent success in the venture and new life to all the two hundred children – many of them suffering from life threatening complex congenital heart disease.

Malayala Manorama arranged a medical camp for the follow up of these 200 children at the Mamman Mapillai hall, Kottayam on 24th & 25th October 2006. Inaugurating the camp Mr.Justice Sirijagan from Kerala High Court lauded Malayala Manorama & Madras Medical Mission for their noble venture. Sri K.M.Mathew, Chief Editor Malayala Manorama announced the treatment for another 25 children with Malayala Manorama support. He exhorted Balajana Sakhyam to raise funds for the treatment of remaining children registered under the scheme. In the camp, a medical team from Madras Medical Mission comprising of Dr. R.Suresh Kumar, Dr. Mullasari Ajit .S., Dr. Robert Coelho, Dr.V.Viswanathan and Dr. Sreeja Pavithran examined 187 children. The mobile diagnostic unit of Madras Medical Mission provided the infrastructure for camp supported by Philips, India. Department of Cardiology, Medical College Kottayam also helped in the camp.

Hridayapoorvam Sakhyam remains the first ever student venture to help needy children with heart ailment. The programme continues and Madras Medical Mission is seeking help from benevolent donors to extend help to an even larger number.
