The Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases under the aegis of the Madras Medical Mission currently performs about 2000 cardiac surgeries in a year, over 600 of them in children. The Institute takes special care to reach its services to patients below the poverty line. Of the 23083 cardiac surgeries performed till September 2004, 6685 have been subsidized and 995 have been completely free. Most of the free surgeries have been in children, the total number of paediatric cardiac surgeries performed till September 2004 being 7993. Our charity work has been supported by individuals and organizations at the national and international levels. Notably the Ratan Tata Trust supports the surgery of 15 patients every month. Paediatric cardiac surgical results of this institution have been outstanding, matched only by a few selected centres in the world. Over 460 paediatric cardiac surgeries were performed in 2004 alone, with a mortality rate below 1%.
Our concern
Since medical treatment is expensive, poor patients are unable to access many of the other cardiac hospitals, (mostly corporate) all over India . The Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases , we have been helping many such needy patients, adults and children, over the years. But continually increasing demands are proving to be much beyond our ability. We have found that similar economic situations in other developing countries have forced even their patients to approach us. This is not only due to non-availability of facilities in their own country but also because of our technical excellence in handling complicated procedures in this speciality. Paediatric cardiac treatment is often practically unavailable in most of the developing and underdeveloped countries, similar to the situation in most Indian villages. Our periodic visits to the villages identify needy patients through medical camps- invariably with a large number of paediatric cases - and help to some extent. But even here we have not touched even the fringe of the problem due to shortage of financial resources.
Could you extend a helping hand?
Collaboration with a donor on an annual basis can extend this facility Of treatment to a specified number of children from a selected country, which needs such assistance. With the cost of medical treatment in India among the lowest in the world, and Indian doctors among the most skillful medical practitioners in the world, we can offer the best treatment at the cheapest cost. A concession of about 20 percent on our charges, ensures that a normal surgery can be performed at a about US $ 2500 under the special programme. This will cover the expenses for the patient's total stay at the hospital for 8 days before and after the surgery, all the medicines and treatment charges, diet, hospital accommodation etc. There will be no extra charges, except in case of unexpected postoperative complications. Accompanying attendants are provided free accommodation, but will have to bear their own and patient's travel and food expenses (with the sponsoring agency providing help, where necessary). |
